Configure a PowerMate with Presentation Prompter

Configuring any controller is a matter of associating a device action with a menu shortcut or Hotkey in Presentation Prompter. We will configure the PowerMate as follows:

Trigger: Action: Shortcut:
Normal Press Toggle Prompter ⌘⏎ (Command + Return)
Long Press Switch Direction ⌘⌥I (Command + Option + I)
Rotate Left Reduce Speed Left Arrow
Rotate Right Increase Speed Right Arrow

How to do it:

  1. Install and launch the PowerMate 3 configuration app.
  2. Select “Default Set” and from the toolbar choose Add Item ‣ Add Group.
    Add Group
  3. From the pane on the right, click “Choose…” and choose Presentation Prompter.
  4. From the toolbar choose Add Item ‣ Add Trigger.
    Add Trigger
  5. Change the “Trigger on” popup to match the appropriate PowerMate trigger. For example, if you are configuring “Toggle Prompter” you will set to to “Normal Press”. If your trigger is Rotate Left or Rotate Right, we also recommend increasing the Manual Sensitivity slider to one tick from the right.

  6. From the toolbar choose Add Item ‣ Key Press.
    Key Press
  7. Click the “Set” button and type the appropriate shortcut. For example, if you are configuring “Toggle Prompter” type ⌘⏎ (Command + Return).
    Set Key
  8. Select Presentation Prompter from the list on the left and repeat steps 4 through 8 until all shortcuts are configured.

Additional Notes:

Depending on your scroll direction preference, you may want to swap the Rotate Left and Rotate Right shortcuts.

The PowerMate software must be running for it to work. From its preferences window you can have it start automatically at you login and remove its Dock icon when running.

Finally, you can adjust the amount of speed change in Presentation Prompter for every turn of the PowerMate dial. In Presentation Prompter’s preferences, adjust the “Speed change rate” as desired.
